Prior to the outbreak of the Civil War, northern and southern newspapers attempted to influence readers and change their opinions regarding state's rights, unionism, and slavery.  Printing editorials and poems in Mecklenburg County newspapers provides further insight into the contentious nature of the South's "Peculiar Institution."
